Position Statement: A call to amend the Aged Care Act 2024 to ensure Cultural Appropriateness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People

28/07/2025

NATSIAACC is calling for urgent amendments to the Aged Care Act 2024 to ensure it delivers justice, equity and culturally safe aged care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Older People.

The current Act fails to fully reflect the lived realities, cultural identities and historical disadvantage experienced by our communities. Our Position Statement outlines three legislative pathways for reform — including a dedicated Act, chapter or integrated schedules — each centred on self-determination and community voice.

NATSIAACC is calling for:

  • True co-design with Elders and communities.

  • Cultural safety as a foundational principle.

  • Equitable, long-term funding models.

  • Independent First Nations oversight.

  • A dedicated Indigenous aged care workforce strategy.
